The Incredible Hanging Temple of Hengshan

This amazing sanctuary was built by a monk called Liao Ran during the late Northem Wei Dinasty and later during the 1900s restored. It is located  in the province of Shanxi and the nearest settlement is Datong city, about 65 away.

The Hanging Temple was built about 16 centuries ago and believe it or not, its only support – small wooden poles still keeps the temple stabile and lean to the Hengshan mountain. The building hangs in height of 246 feet above the ground.

This unique temple contains 40 rooms, is connected with a network of passageways and it hosts even 3 religions! Confusianism, Taoism and Buddhism. The Hanging Temple is one of the main tourist attractions and historical sites in the Datong area now.
