Desert Breath – 100,000 m2 Art Installation in Sahara Desert
Desert Breath is an art project created by D.A.ST. Arteam, the team of artists, which was founded in 1995 just for purpose of creating this project. Team consists of installation artist Danae Stratou, industrial designer and architect Alexandra Stratou and architect Stella Constatinides.
Located in the eastern Sahara desert, Desert Breath covers the area of 100,000 square meters and expands to the gigantic ornament made of 8,000 square meters of sand and 30-meter diameter large pool in the centre of it. Artists explain, “The project is rooted in our common desire to work in the desert. In our mind’s eye the desert was a place where one experiences infinity. We were addressing the desert as a state of mind, a landscape of the mind. The point of departure was the conical form, the natural formation of the sand as a material. “
Desert Breath took 2 years to complete and was finished in March 1997. Even after more than 17 years, this art installation remains visible. You can view Desert Breath on Google Earth by entering coordinates: 27°22’54.59″N, 33°37’48.46″E (or just by clicking this link).
