Russian Generals in Ancient Paintings Replaced With Celebrities
In the early 1800′s, an English portraitist George Dawe painted 329 portraits of Russian generals active during Napoleon’s French invasion of Russia in 1812. Inspired by George Dawe’s work, Steve Payne initiated a project, titled “Replaceface”, an ongoing series of portraits where modern celebrities are transported back in time into the role of 19th-century Russian generals.
Using digital copies of 1800’s paintings, Steve Payne creates manipulations where he skilfully replaces Russian generals with a Hollywood celebrities. Digital artist use the same brushstrokes, colors, and style to retouch photos of celebrities faces and create a realistic composition that perfectly blends old and new elements. Looking at these manipulations you may quickly forget that the works weren’t actually created in the 19th-century.
